Meta ad fatigue: the 5 signals to watch
Every marketer knows ad fatigue is a thing. Almost nobody checks for it on a schedule. By the time it shows up in your CPA, you have already wasted a week of budget. The five signals below will catch it about four to seven days earlier.
1. Frequency above 2.5 on a single creative
This is the one most people quote but the most people also ignore. Look at Ads Manager, break down by ad (not by ad set), and filter for the last 7 days. Any individual creative with frequency over 2.5 is in the danger zone. Over 3.0 and it is already hurting you.
2. CTR dropping while CPM stays flat
If your CPMs are stable but your CTR has slid 20 percent in the last week, the auction is not getting more expensive — people are just scrolling past your ad. That is a pure creative signal and it is the single cleanest fatigue indicator you can pull out of Meta.
3. Comment quality degrading
An underrated signal. Read the comment section on your top ad once a week. When you start seeing "is this still available", "saw this ad three times already", or actual complaints about seeing the ad too often, you have audience fatigue even if the math does not show it yet.
4. Incremental ROAS falling while reported ROAS holds
If you are running any kind of geo or holdout test, check the delta. When your reported ROAS looks fine but your incremental ROAS is dropping, what is actually happening is that you are serving the same ad to people who were going to convert anyway. That is the most expensive form of fatigue and nobody catches it without a test.
5. CPA rising on prospecting only
Break your reports down by funnel stage. If retargeting ROAS is stable but prospecting CPA is climbing, fatigue is hitting your cold traffic first — which is always where it starts. Retargeting trails by about 10 days.
What to do
- Ship two new creative variants this week. Not tomorrow. This week.
- Pause the oldest creative in the ad set (not the winner — the oldest).
- Rotate through 3 to 5 active creatives per ad set, never more.
- Set a calendar reminder to re-check frequency every Monday morning.
nordenagent monitors all five of these signals automatically and flags them in the daily report before CPA actually moves. If you have been reacting to fatigue instead of catching it early, that is the delta the product is built for.
